December 4, 2017: The Alpha Team Organisation’s ClimatEducate Project has signed the Lofoten Declaration. Project Chief Director Lorrayne Isidoro signed the declaration on behalf of the team following online consultation.
The Declaration is a global call signed by almost 220 organizations from 55 countries during the 23rd Conference of Parties (COP23) to the UNFCCC held in Bonn, Germany in November 2017. The declaration “affirms that there is urgent responsibility and moral obligation of wealthy fossil fuel producers to lead in putting an end to fossil fuel development and to manage the decline of existing production”. The project’s move to sign the declaration was also meant to show that the youth and citizens of developing countries, who are the most vulnerable to climate change effects, are not silent in the call for “climate justice”. The declaration was named after the Lofoten Islands of Norway, a region where some oil companies have been lobbying to drill for decades, but have been blocked by a growing movement to protect the region and the climate. The project also calls for urgent action among other youth movements to participate in the mitigation, adaptation and other means of implementation of the Paris Agreement in their respective countries.
